short description
The sculptural rendition delivered here, more popularly known as a Bagnar, represents the traditional pig-grazing hut of the Rabha tribe located in Assam and Meghalaya. Built of eco-friendly materials like split wooden strips, twisted jute ropes, bamboo, and straw, the circular house is a testimony to the tribe's time-honored knowledge of rural animal husbandry coupled with sustainable approaches to local construction. The wall construction of the pig house includes finely split wooden strips bound very firmly with the twisting of jute ropes and bamboo ties, with four very sturdy vertical wooden sticks, placing the pig shelter in support giving it strength and durability. The most distinguishing feature is a detachable conical straw roof thrown in as a practical solution for cleaning and maintenance; the roof also offers protection against heavy rain and scorching sun, which is necessary for areas with high humidity.

Such animal shelters for pigs, which occupy an important place in the Rabha tribe's agronomic and economic lifestyles, have therefore to be built close to the house and are made out of locally available biodegradable materials.
