In the northeastern Indian state of Meghalaya, the hoe blade is considered one of the traditional agriculture implements under the Khasi Tribe. The hoe is made of iron and is almost triangular in shape and hence is expected to last long as a tool for soil tilling. The sides of the hoe are further made narrow towards the pointed cutting end, making it useful for weeding, digging, and loosening soils up from the hilly areas and terraced agricultural fields. The hoe blade is further stiffened by virtue of a central ridge running down the length, which, coupled with the pointed ends, allows it to be used for some tough fieldwork. On one end is a long tang that finishes off the hoe with a wooden handle. Traditionally, they were shifting cultivators (jhum) and paddy(wet rice) cultivators on terraced hills. Such blades denote an intimate understanding of the land, resourcefulness, and self-sustaining lifestyle typical among the people.
