short description
The Nicobarese tribe of these islands, located here in the Bay of Bengal, believes that whatever resource exploitation takes place in every sense is inseparable from their culture. Such as these water carriers made from hollowed coconut shells used by the tribe, as an example of its creativity and traditional craftsmanship, while at the same time being a concrete item that is appropriated from the way of life and environment of the tribe. This set consists of two hollowed-out coconut shells that have been polished enough to hold water; a small hole is made close to the mouth of each shell through which split cane strips are inserted and tied around the two shells. Cane bindings thus hold the vessels snugly and provide a handle for convenient carrying, or can be hung on a post or tree branch. Traditionally these vessels are used for drinking water and other liquids. They signify the Nicobarese people's sustainable lifestyle, comprising coconuts and cane growing rampantly on the islands. The tribe tends to use these sources with minimal wastage. That would be a very simple, yet effective example of design that would show how the Nicobarese adapt their environment for daily needs with minimal interference.

These are hand crafts which have also social importance as these static art forms are subject to diversification and modification over the years, thereby being absorbed into the family tradition. These vessels thus stand testimony to the artistic expression of the Nicobarese, the balance with nature, and traditional knowledge systems.
