description
An oblong cane helmet features valuable Naga traditional tribal headgear. The cane work is freely structured and finely processed. It fuses aesthetic simplicity with functional design; this helmet becomes indigenous craftsmanship. It celebrates the traditions of the warrior culture in Nagaland, noted for their ceremonial regalia.
Two different fringes made with dried grass decorate the helmet, add meaning, and give prominence to both history and ceremonies. Possibly, the natural adornments represent the spirit realm, aping animal forms, or participate in ceremonial performances. The rim of the helmet has two extra cane strips with tight reinforcements for extra strength and durability, which is required for any ritualistic use and some lightweight protection. Notably, two more cane strips run across from one edge of the rim to the other, above the dome of the helmet, forming a cross brace that adds a structure and aesthetic dimension to the helmet. This design strikes a fine balance between traditional usefulness and tribal aesthetics
