The Wood Comb of the Nishi tribe, which is an indigenous community in Arunachal Pradesh, is an exquisitely made traditional ornament fulfilling both economic and ostentatious purposes. This wood comb is doubly-sided, for it's a grooming utensil but not only; it shows an identity and craftsmanship widely accepted among men and women of the Nishi tribe. The comb is designed adequately on two different sides. The ventral side possesses long, tightly arranged teeth making it suitable for narrow grooming, but the opposite side has short, spaced-out teeth suited for untangling and styling. This dorsal side is slightly concave with a deliberately carved horizontal marking below the center which is further appealing aesthetically and culturally. The careful detailing on the comb certainly reflects his artistic talents and mood of the Nishi people and their relationship with nature.

description
Besides being useful, this wooden comb occupies a very special place in the Nishi traditions. Most often, this comb is used as a hair ornament; as a token of respect and appreciation, it is gifted at times when a special occasion is celebrated. Strong and fine carvings of such combs make them the most respected tribal handicraft with the potential to find value in ethnic markets and cultural exhibitions. While the Nishi artisans carry on the legacy of age-old wood carving, this double-sided wooden comb will forever testify to their rich heritage and craftsmanship and keep their cultural legacy alive.
