short description
There are many traditional bamboo ear ornaments and very few such industrialized ornaments, as seen in Nicobarese communities of the Nicobar Islands found in the Bay of Bengal. It goes beyond mere ornaments but really talks about the close relationship that the tribes have with nature-very rich material culture which is highly sustainable, really simple, and has deeper meaning: ivory aspects captured by this handmade ornament. The ornament is made from a cylindrical piece or tube of bamboo: drained out; completely plain and unadorned; and speaks of the texture and beauty inherent to bamboo. It is the hallmark of Nicobarese aesthetics and gives a preference for the functional rather than overly decorative and made of organic materials. This ornament is really cylindrical in diameter to fit properly in the earlobe, which has been stretched by manipulating the lobe-in many tribes, this particular form of body modification is maintained as an identifier of age, status, or culture.

Ear ornaments are largely worn for rituals, festivals, and other gatherings, representing identity and pride in culture. Thus, in Nicobarese culture, ornaments are not only decorations; they stand for the place of the wearer within a community. Beloved local eco-sustainable bamboo resource and integral to the lives of Nicobarese through construction, tools, and making those ear ornaments. Probably, much of the ornament's simplicity resonates with larger philosophies-prized values of beauty in nature, craftsmanship, and use-true of those of the tribe.
