short description
This slim-gourd-pot is a traditional utility for the Khonds, an indigenous tribe mainly residing in the state of Odisha in India. In perfect harmony with nature, the Khonds utilize local organic materials for their day-to-day living and expertly transform them into usable tools. The vessel is made from the natural fruit, gourd, that has been hollowed out and dried, which is worthy of durability and water-resisting properties. The bottom narrow end of the gourd vessel is cut open in the tradition of very small mouth vessels meant for pouring and drinking. The rounded wholeness allows for appreciable storage of water or, for that matter, traditionally brewed wines to clarify, which are necessary for sustenance and ritual life for the Khonds.

The gourd's handle, formed by the threads of the bark, aids one in carrying the vessel or hanging it when not in use. Bark fiber signifies the Khonds' superior knowledge of their forest resources vis-a-vis sustainable practices. Such vessels are often taken along for travel, for field works, or public events, mainly during festivals and rituals for sharing rice wine. Besides being an object of utility, the gourd vessel is also an expression of the Khond tribe's eco-friendly way of life, innately woven into their culture. It poses a live example of how the indigenous people, while preserving their culture, shape the use of natural materials according to their needs and that too with utmost regard for the environment.
