Multi-Functional Bamboo Basket
description
The Santhal tribe, as one of the most popular indigenous communities in eastern India, leads a close life with nature and is widely known for its exceptional talent in bamboowork. The craftsmanship through traditional knowledge of bamboo weaving yields several functional artifacts, among which Tupla bamboo basket is an important part of their existence at home and in agriculture.
A Tupla is a gorgeously fashioned bamboo tube made from finely split bamboo strips. The weaving technique used in this case ensures that it is sturdy, most likely to resist everyday rural wear and tear. It has a top circular opening for accessibility. However, the bottom is square-shaped offering a flat, stable foundation. Importantly, each of the four corners of the base goes into pointed projections, a design feature that probably helps in stability and balance when it is placed on uneven surfaces.
This combination of circular and square forms in Tupla has its functional as well as aesthetic significance. It is usually used for storing and transporting grains, vegetables, and other household or agricultural items. The Santhal tribe has reflected upon its sharp acumen for utility mixed with artistic creation for it to be passed down through generations.
Like other bamboo artifacts made in the Santhal community, the Tupla represents the sustainable practices and the deep-rooted nature of people towards forests and their natural resources.
