Traditionally known as Osul, Mekarie is a bamboo basket made for a living by the Toda tribe, who are the original inhabitants of the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu. Circular in shape, this meticulously handcrafted basket with split bamboo strips represents the weaving skills and bond with nature possessed by the Toda tribe. The beautiful circular mouth of this basket is surrounded by additional woven bamboo strips for decorating purposes as well as strengthening for design functionalities.
The strips reinforce the rim by adding strength and durability to help maintain the shape of the basket while in use. They are also tightly woven to extend further the structure, which allows the basket to withstand the weight of goods being carried in it.
Mekarie is functional for the Toda people for storing and carrying foods, grains, and other items. It is central to their everyday life and installation, showing their excellence in bamboo work.
