short description
The Mathi is a type of metal bangle worn by Binjhal women. Binjhal are one of the tribal ethnic groups of Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The Binjhal have a rich cultural heritage and wear their Mathi, symbols of identity, status, and belonging to their culture, not only as an ornament of beauty. The Mathi is an object of fine craftsmanship, made from white metal, circular in shape, and intricately engraved in crisscross patterns on its outer surface. The fine craftsmanship shows that such metalworking was and is mainly done by Binjhal artisans using simple hand tools, the knowledge of which was passed down from generation to generation. Opposed to each other on the rim are two metal balls arranged in very close proximity to one another, thus providing some flexibility so that they can easily be worn or taken off by a woman, which adds a characteristic touch to its unique and special appeal.

The mathis are mostly worn in pairs or sets during the festivals, marriages, and community events, often stacked along other bangles creating a layered, musical effect when the bearer moves. It not only has a purpose in appearance but also acts as a signifier of definition of femininity, marital status, and social pride. Such ornaments as Mathi are far beyond ornaments in that they are rooted in the social and ceremonial structure of their lives and carry their artistic heritage and wisdom built in generations to those people.
