short description
The Lubaida is a traditional, visually strange necklace in the Bonda tribe of India, one of the oldest and most culturally kept indigenous people living in the hill regions of Malkangir district, Odisha. This is an accessory worn by Bonda women among many others, denoting beauty, identity, and tradition. The Lubaida necklace is huge, made with seven different strings, and each string threaded meticulously into small, round bright yellow glass beads. Its striking yellow color enhances not just its beauty but also refers to brightness and vitality in the Bonda culture context. The seven strands repeats lay out a layered and symmetrical design complementing a total Bonda traditional dress, which means heavy ornaments and very few pieces of textile wrapping.

Besides ornamentation, the social and cultural importance of the Lubaida goes beyond that. It is a mark of a woman belonging to the tribe and is usually put on at community gatherings, rituals, and other important occasions in a woman's life. The use of glass beads, perhaps purchased through local barter or traded, point to how the interaction with the tribe's neighboring areas shaped out in history, even though they have kept their distinct style. Craftsmanship in making the Lubaida captures the feeling of the artistic sensibility of the Bonda people as well as their deep association with jewellery made by hand and that is sustainable. As modernization touches tribal people as well, conservation of such ornaments becomes important so that the treasure of culture possessed by the Bonda tribe is preserved
