short description
Among the lesser-known indigenous cultures in India is the Khyang tribe in the northeast state of Mizoram. They have always depended upon forest livelihoods, with hunting as much a part of sustenance today as it is of self-defense. One of the vital implements from their traditional killing kit is the spearhead, an excellent example of indigenous hard metal handiwork. The spearhead of the Khyang tribe is leaf-shaped and manufactured from one piece of iron with a pointed tip which gives the advantage of penetration in precision while hunting or combat. The bottom part of this spear head is cylindrical, which helps in firmly gripping it to a wooden shaft. Just above this cylindrical base, there are has two barbs-one on the two sides, which are used to avoid easy dislodging of the spear after it has hit a target- a common and effective design in traditional hunting weapons.

More than a weapon, this spearhead has become relative to nature, self-sufficiency, and skills learned from generation to generation. It hunted animals for food and protected the community at its worst. Today, the spearhead is important, even though modern tools and weapons have now taken over traditional ones in daily use, as those creations remain as cultural symbols of the identity and craftsmanship of the Khyang people's way of living. Stored in museums and collections, this spearhead gives a glimpse into the tribal knowledge systems and traditional technologies that belong to the indigenous people of Mizoram.
