THe Chei headgear commonly used by the Kabui Naga Tribe, thus it is seen as a work of their craft as well as their great cultural symbolisms. Aptly made from split bamboo and shaped into a ring, this headgear has its body covered with red cotton thread, thus showing how natural materials are used by the tribe. The back of it is decorated with five peacock feathers, symbols of beauty and pride, as well as other bird feathers and wool fringes that make it look beautiful.
At the center, the front portion depicts a semicircular metallic piece coated with gold-colored paper, illustrating a mixture of textile and metal works. In the central part of the metallic piece is green cotton thread, with attached bunches of paper strips at each end. All in all, the ornament from the combination of feathers, wool, and paper strips gives considerable ornamentation and ritualistic significance to the headdress. Inherited by men of the Kabui Naga tribe, the headdress is predominantly used in important cultural and ceremonial occasions. With its intricate designs, it represents the values of the tribe incorporating nature into artistic craftsmanship. The headdress is now at home in the Indian Museum Kolkata, where it continues to symbolize the rich heritage of the Kabui Naga Tribe.
