short description
The Ka-Wait-Khumrit is a significant type of distinctive traditional dao of the Khasi tribe in Meghalaya and it's especially appreciated for its simple and elegant design as well as its symbolic detailing. The major features of this type of dao are generally supposed to be its long, curved iron blade whose beak-shaped features at its tip and head give it a bird-like profile which may be due to the tribal totem association or a resemblance with local fauna. It has a cylindrical wooden handle, which tapers slightly towards the base, making it very comfortable to hold and grip firmly. Tightly wound at the junction where the blade enters the handle, this plaited cane strap thus secures the connection and gives a touch of craftsmanship of the indigenous peoples. Hence this cane binding not only strengthens the joint but it also serves as a decorative element of Khasi material culture.

Primitive usage of such daos would have been for all purposes, i.e., hunting, self-protection, agricultural clearing, and even ceremonial practices. The K-Wait-Khumrit would be the most clear example of how very close the Khasi people are with their natural surrounding as they ingeniously convert practical things into gorgeous forms. Now it remains an imitation under India's tribal heritage; it is as precious a type of culture as it is functional in terms of historical documentation in museum collection.
