short description
The Ka-Wait-Khument, known rightly as the Bill-Hooked Dao, is called a weapon and utility tool of the Khasi tribe hailing from the northeastern state of Meghalaya in India. This brilliantly designed dao is a perfect crescent-shaped cutting edge that tends to slice or clear precise forest vegetation with power. The body of the blade is long and iron-forged and with the upper part being broader and narrowing down towards the base, which fits tightly into the wooden handle. The handle is cylindrical, slightly tapering towards the bottom, giving a comfortable grip. A vital component of this dao is the plaited cane strap carefully wrapped securely around the upper part of the handle that enhances the blade's joint and adds a touch of indigenous craftsmanship. This kind of detailing creates the traditional knowledge in functionality with artistry in hand tools of the Khasi people.

The Ka-Wait-Khment used to be an implement for agriculture, wood-cutting, and tribal rituals. Most important, it is the equipment of resourcefulness, strength, and heritage. With the advent of modern tools, this typical dao retains its cultural and ethnographic value. Now, it is enshrined as part of rich tribal heritage in India.
