Gadaba is a tribe mainly located in Koraput District of Odisha, bordering Andhra Pradesh. In essence, they are a tribe of nature and tradition not away from the means of subsistence, mainly agriculture and fishing. The most exclusive device used in fishing of this tribe is the Jat-Ake, which is a fishing net fashioned with simple yet effective indigenous techniques. The Jat-Ake is made of cotton thread, a biodegradable material, which depicts the sustainability practices of the Gadaba tribe because it is handwoven as net for fishing. It is light in weight and very flexible for casting and retrieval. And the most distinctive aspect of the net is that small iron pieces are embedded around its circumference.
