description
This is an amazing example of traditional metalwork and functionalism in war outfits of the tribal people, such as worn by tribal Singphos from Arunachal Pradesh. It is circular in shape and completely made of iron, which demonstrates skilled craftsmanship of the community.
The structure of the helmet boasts prominent ridges on both its anterior and posterior sides, perhaps to deflect blows when a person is engaged in combat. An unusual addition to the design is the other iron part attached at the front, which serves as a protective shade for the forehead and eyes. A circular plate on top anchors a narrowly cylindrical pipe, perhaps for ornamental use in mounting feathers or tribal insignias. The 'helmet' is not just armor but has become a synonym for power and identity for the Singpho warriors. It delineates the martial traditions embedded in this tribe as well as their talents at creating close-combat defense for the hilly terrain.
