short description
The traditional conical headgear, belonging to the Tangkhul Nagas of Manipur, is a fine display of the tribe's refined craftsmanship and cultural symbolism associated with protection and ceremonial objects. Amidst its many uses, every day or ceremonial, the helmet is fashioned out of cane and bamboo splints-basic raw materials found in the region. The helmet sports a huge metal disc representing strength and bravery and a decorative leather piece that adds a visual and symbolic meaning-often associated with warrior pride or status. A loop made of bark fiber is attached, probably for tightening the helmet or for attaching decorative things like feathers or tassels for use during rituals or clan gatherings.

The helmets were worn by warriors or community leaders during ceremonial dances, festivals, or war simulations of sorts, and this summarizes the Tangkhul tribesmen's creative blend of utility with aesthetics. While the conical shape of the helmet allows it to sit snugly, the shape also brilliantly mirrors the local design thought that is intermixed with environmental and cultural adaptation.
