An ancient helmet belonging to the Naga Tribe of Nagaland, this is an example of the exquisite craftsmanship and warlike heritage of this tribe. It is a conical helmet mainly made from finely plaited cane strips that provide protection as well as pride. The distinguishing thing about this helmet is that it is excessively adorned. All of these adornments, the round shells, a boar's tooth and a band of multicolored glass beads, are held together to symbolize status, valor, and tradition. The shells are held up by the sides of the helmet on a chain of beads that give it a rather aesthetic and symbolic quality. Such helmets are used for ceremonial events, tribal dances, and communal gatherings by Naga warriors. They still render relevance in the cultural setup within which they exist today.
