short description
The ceremonial headgear, or Toperi, is a marvelous exemplar of the skillset of the Khonds tribe in Odisha. It was traditionally donned during marriage rituals. The headdress itself comprises metal plates that are carefully aligned to develop a circular frame, both functional and symbolic. The frame is decorated with eight metal plates; four of them converge at the top to meet a single rupee coin, which signifies prosperity and wealth. The other four plates, known as Kekori, are vertically placed and terminated by 25-paisa coins. These coins are said to symbolize the affluence of the tribe and financial security of the community.

Hanging in front of this headgear are six coins of 25 paisa, tied by iron wire to the circular frame. It is believed that these coins would bring forth good fortune and blessings for important life events such as marriage. Toperi, with its intricate metal-coined designs, represents the cultural identity of the tribe and its respect for traditions, etching into memory the bonding of families through marriages. The Khonds tribe is one of the most treasure houses of tribal ornaments that reflect their values, rituals, and belief systems that remain significantly a part of their lives.
