For the Manipuri people of Manipur, fishing has been a prime livelihood activity for generations in a state replete with rivers, lakes, and wetlands. The Manipuri traditionally employed the rectangular-shaped cotton fish net as one of their fishing implements—simple and effective. The applicability of this handwoven fishing tackle made from cotton threads reveals the tribe's comprehensive knowledge of their natural environment and ingenious craftsmanship. The net, rectangular in shape, is entirely crafted out of durable cotton thread, hence light, flexible, and easy to operate in still and flowing waters.
A rigid rope is attached to the sides of the net for shape maintenance, handling, and setting during fishing works. Such a design permits the net to be either spread out or drawn in, according to the applied method. This cotton fishing net is mainly operational in freshwater bodies, especially Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake of northeast India, to catch small and medium-sized fish. Since the material used is cotton, it is biodegradable and eco-friendly, correspondingly following the sustainable lifestyle of the Manipuri tribe. The survival of such traditional equipment fosters the community's economy and sustains cultural practices that have been followed for centuries. Today, these nets have embodied the spirit of utility as well as continuity of knowledge regarding the indigenous fishing wisdom of Manipur.
