The Binjhal tribe which is an indigenous community found mainly in Odisha and part of Chhattisgarh, has had naturally co-existing life for all time. The deep-rooted knowledge of forest ecology and wildlife behavior is reflected in the traditional tools developed for hunting and one of which is the Gudurguda, a bird trap that expresses the presence of ingenuity, sustainability, and craftsmanship of the Binjhal tribe.
The Gudurguda is primarily made of natural locally available materials—wood and split bamboo. The base trap is flat and oblong, carved out of a single piece of wood for stability, a very strong foundation. Across this wooden base, multiple strips of split bamboo are laid on top of each other to form the cover of a trap, creating a lightweight yet effective structure, making it easy to camouflage in the wild.At the core of the Gudurguda, such gravitas is seen. A little apparatus for entrapping the bait is painstakingly constructed and tied to twisted bark strings again exhibiting the ingenious resource of the tribe in plant utilization. These bark strings are then tied at the head to two upright wooden bars fixed at either ends of the trap's base allowing for tension and movement when a bird interacts with the bait. Upon contact, the mechanism releases such that the bamboo slats close and trap the bird without causing harm.
