short description
Located in the eastern Himalayan region, the Garo tribe enjoys popularity in Meghalaya because of its traditional knowledge regarding natural material and sustainable living. Among the many utilitarian objects made and used by the Garo, the gourd vessel is simple and functional, yet above all, is considered eco-friendly. Gourd vessels are made from mature bottle gourd shells that have been dried. Harvesting happens after a full-grown size is reached, and gourd vessels sundried completely. This is then followed by hollowing out the inside contents. The spherical body of the vessel provides balance and capacity, and the long neck is tube-like, allowing easy pouring. The end of the neck is slightly bulbous and has a circular hole on the side, allowing pouring out the liquid slowly or putting in a stopper or cover.

Traditionally, it is used by the Garo for storing and serving drinking water, rice beer (called bitchi in the local language), or herbal infusions. During the humid climate in this region, this natural material would ideally help keep the contents cool. The gourd vessel is much more than just a domestic thing; it manifests the Garo tribe's beliefs of living in harmony with nature. Such items are generally handmade in families and passed through generations; Garo craftsmanship or art places emphasis on sustainability, functionality, and simple beauty, thus retaining the culture's identity while respecting the environment.
