short description
the Rabha tribe has created the Chakatlehoi, which is an ancestral gourd vessel. Most times, they use this kind of vessel, which is dried and hollowed out from the gourd for containment purposes for liquids such as water, oil, or even fermented beverages. The holistic shape and design of the vessel display the eco-sensitive lifestyle of the tribe that is well-rooted within the forest environment.

crafted gourd vessel
description
This has a very specific form-it has a round lower part, which stands stably on different surfaces, and the upper part, which is elongated and tubular, makes it very easy to pour out liquids. A small hole at the very end of the tubular section then acts as the mouth of the vessel. This design is highly practical and also keeps the pouring under control without having too much spillage.
The Chakatlehois are made by drying very well the gourd, taking out all the inner pulp, and sometimes polishing the outer surface. It is light, durable, and biodegradable, thus sustainable as a tool for the rural tribal life. Now this piece finds its preservation at the Indian Museum, Kolkata, as an exhibit of the creative mind at work by transforming the resources of nature into everyday objects that could be functional and aesthetically appealing.
