short description
The Gourd Shell Vessel with Dried Creeper Attached is an unusual specimen and a customary product of the Reang tribe, one of the indigenous people of Tripura in Northeast India. The Reang or Bru, as they are also called, are recognized for being close to nature and for applying indigenous knowledge in practical aspects of their daily lives. This vessel stands testimony to their expertise in converting natural materials into handy domestic use. The vessel is truly an opulent item: it has been carved out from a very big and dried gourd, chosen mainly for its size, strength, and hollow shape. The basis of the vessel has a rounded lower body so it rests evenly on the ground. What gives special significance to this object is the creeper, which has been dried and left more or less intact so that it can be used either as a natural handle or hanger. This dried vine adds to the rustic charm of the vessel, and it is also used to hang or suspend the vessel from a wooden peg or branch inside a homestead or granary.
