short description
Fai-Ko is a ladle that the Reang Tribe of Tripura still uses traditionally. Craftsmanship has been very able with this ladle since it is created from half of a dried gourd shell. Present in the Indian Museum, Kolkata, this eco-friendly kitchen tool carries within itself the tradition of the tribe by being deeply connected with nature and sustainable living practices. It is simple. But it performs its duty satisfactorily, hollow, getting dried, and the natural curve suffices for scooping and serving. An organic shape is better with no modifications for that as nature makes ready tools that require no modifications. Fai-Ko is currently used in households for serving food and liquids, especially in community "feasts" or traditional ceremonies.

Among the Reangs, the gourd is not used only for the food consumed, but also for several purposes in the household. Such usage of plant-based material such as gourd shells indicates the waste-minimized lifestyle and indigenous ecological knowledge of the tribe. The Fai-Ko is a synonym of serving spoon but is much beyond that, being a mark of ingenuity, simplicity, and regard for the environment, which is defined in this spirit by the way of the Reang. This serves as a reminder of the efficacy of indigenous practices in sustainable living even today.
