description
this traditional waist belt is a beautifully crafted piece of the Lambadi tribe of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Made out of twisted reddish and black cotton threads, this belt is a glorification of the tribe in the realm of textile art and decorative symbolism.
Cowrie shells- symbols of prosperity and femininity in Indian folk traditions- are very meticulously fastened to the base rope of the belt at regular intervals. Besides creating visual charm to the belt, these shells impart a soft chime as the wearer moves. There are also eight metal bells at even distances on the belt, enhancing the bell-like beauty of the attire while taking part in traditional dances and ceremonies. Thus, Gondyaloo is not a mere decorative object but finds itself deeply interwoven into the cultural performances of the tribe and rituals, often worn during festivals, marriages, or religious processions. A combination of natural fibers, shells, and metals embodies the Lambadi community's affinity with nature and their magnificent artistic heritage.
