short description
This magnificently massive wooden statue made by the Sutradhar tribe of Assam appeals to the everlasting and furious forms of Shakti Goddess Durga, engaged in intense divine battle against the demon Mahishasura. The very high skill and spiritual artistry came through carving the statue from a single piece of wood.Durga is shown in her traditional form, that is, being ten-armed, with each hand holding symbolic weapons given by various gods-a trident, sword, discus, bow, and conch. She is shown in action and situating herself on a special lion, which is yet again a representation of her divine vahana. In front of her stands the demon Asura, kneeling in submission; his expression is not indifferent but shows unwillingness and valuable submission, making the triumphant always-true statement of good over evil.

The entire composition would be seated atop a rectangular wooden pedestal on the ground, which provides strength and elevation. Their symmetry, detailing, and dynamic posture all showcase the deep-rooted connection to religious storytelling and traditional symbolization of the Sutradhar community.Historically, the Sutradhar tribe of Assam is known as the temple artisans, storytellers, and sculptors that put the most significant effort into preserving religious narratives through woodworks. Such effigies are not artistic objects; they are living embodiments of mythology worshipped in festivals like Durga Puja and revered as sacred objects in homes and temples alike. This idol is an excellent piece of tribal devotional art-they myth it with ritualistic usage and jams with different forms of skilled craftsmanship passed down through generations and deep into the cultural identity of Assam.
