Because of its design, it scoops water and then throws it with ease.
Simplistically put, the Fakuai does the job however. Most often, it drains water off fish traps, small ponds, and dug-out fish storage pits, where excess water can obscure the sight or allow fish to escape. This tool is operated mainly using one's hand alone or in tandem with others, especially during community fish-catching activities. Further, it also helps to lower or raise the volume of water for easier location, collection, or trapping of fish in shallow places. Nonetheless, it can be seen to be used along with other fish gear, like the bamboo traps and fish traps in a few localities only. The Fakuai signifies the resourcefulness and adaptability of the Reang tribe through local materials for practical needs. It also highlights their tradition of sustainable fishing practices that have been inherited and passed down through generations.
