short description
Amidst the various tribals of Orisha, it is the Khonds who boast of a rich culture, a sustainable lifestyle, and brilliance in crafting items of daily utility. Among these creations is wooden comb making, commonly made in a pair comb that occupies an important space in the community for individual grooming as well as cultural identity. Each of the two wooden combs is almost square in shape, ornamented with fine craftsmanship by raw woods possessing local features. The uniqueness of these wooden combs comes from their very duality-one side with fine teeth meant for very meticulous grooming whereas broader tooth waves appear on the other side for detangling thicker and more manageable strands. Utility thus stands in stark contrast with thought considerate tribal craftsmanship.

Traditionally, it was the males and females of the Khond community who shared the use of these wooden combs for personal hygiene but to express personal discipline and ceremonial grooming emblematic of social identity. The simple materials symbolize the sensibilities of the Khond people in nature, who is to select a local wood and fashion it-extrude, carve, and polish into a meaningful household object.Unlike artificially made combs, these hand-carved wooden combs stand as an evidence for indigenous sustainability, thus bringing out a glimpse of tribal philosophy of minimalism and respect of nature.
