short description
The Dhanu, often spelled as Dhanu or referred to as the bamboo bow, originally belonged to the Birhor group of Jharkhand's Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG). The stave of this bow is made of split bamboo and kept as such for being chosen from the best, naturally flexible to strong. The bow string is made thinly sliced bamboos fastened at the ends of the stave with twisted cotton thread. These semi-nomadic forest dwellers who form a closely knit fellow-feeling with Nature therefore inherit article-in-the-household products from hunting. Rest of his sustenance is taken from hunting these most small game birds easily caught with such easy weapons. The simplicity with which design and raw materials, entirely biodegradable for a habitat speak of the sustainability and environmentally friendly of the tribe.

It is a great skill that goes into making bows that have been passed on from generation to generation in the family. Usually, these boys learn to make small bows for themselves when they are very young. Other natural fibers include those with which tools were made, and cotton threads tie the bows together. But in this modern time, Dhanu is the reflection of identity, existence and craft of the Birhor. Dhanu has not her place only in day-to-day activities but also in some ritualistic and ceremonial occasions along with traditional games to keep the memory alive of the tribe born.
