short description
The Chang Naga tribe, an indigenous populace of the district Nagaland located in Tuensang, is famous for its well-developed skills and for its age-old customs associated with hunting and warfare. Many artifacts culturally significant to them include one beautiful and functional object of traditional design—the bamboo arrow case or quiver. The bamboo quiver is not just a functional object but an artistic expression of such. It is ornamented with a carefully made decorative lid trimmed with pleated strips of cane placed adequately to fit over the opening and safeguard the arrows stored inside. The body of the quiver is made of a hollow bamboo shaft, light yet strong enough to carry arrows across rough and rugged terrain while hunting or traveling.

description
Set on either side of the bamboo case is a very finely pleated cane band that not only accentuates the beauty of the quiver but also gives added strength to the entire structure. Affixed to this band is a small ring made of twisted cane strips. Then, long twisted strips of cane are threaded through this ring and tied to another ring that holds the lid. This gives a quiver handle that can be slung over the shoulder or carried by hand. This kind of attention to detail is indication of a material insight and configuring blend of function and form held deeply by the Chang tribe. This arrow-case thus confirmed the practical needs of the bearer and served as a medium to express the identity, skill, and status of that person within the community.
