The Santals of Bengal and present-day Jharkhand, Bihar, and Orissa consider this bamboo basket of great artistry to have some daily utility, along with artistic expression. Bamboo, besides being a very basic material for baskets, is, in that context, accepted as an effector of beauty by an artistic society that dwells in harmony with her surroundings.
The artistry in question concerns the delicate work of splitting thin bamboo strips for weaving into the baskets, round open at the top, woven tightly all the way around the rim to assure strength and durability. The semi-flat base is carved out, forming four distinctive corner cuts, thus, elevating and bracing the foundation. After this, colored strips from two green and one red bamboo are interwoven in a decorative design around the middle section of the basket, a proof of the aesthetic sense of this tribe that dyes its basket using natural dye.Such baskets are used to store grains, bring produce from the fields, festivals, or ritualistic functions. Basically, basket-making is a community/family affair and has been passed on through generations, especially in the agricultural off-seasons.
