short description
Cylindrical Basket with Square Base is a very ancient craft owned by the Reang tribe, an indigenous ethnic group residing mainly in the state of Tripura in northeastern India. Best known for fine weaving and the skillful sustainable use of natural materials, the Reang tribe has painstakingly crafted this design. The basket is cylindrical in shape with a square base, a feature setting it apart in providing yet another security to the basket while on earth. Towards the body, the basket's weavers use separate bamboo splints taken from the bamboo plant, which are flexible yet strong in nature to provide an easy-to-carry but very strong basket. Being in itself a micronitrate raw material, the Reang tribe's other-hand uses bamboo for centuries in making a wide variety of articles.

To further strengthen the basket for durability, near the bottom and just below the rim, the extra-weave is used, thickening the weave. This would grant the strength to the areas most prone to be damaged by sagging or tearing under persistent use. Furthermore, the thicker weaving makes the baskets withstand heavier loads without losing shape and become pertinent support in the life of the Reang in their daily chores. Cylindrical baskets with a square base are generally used to gather food, store domestic goods, or carry supplies. This carries the essence of a relationship the Reang have with the natural world wherein they manufacture functional and sustainable items that are intricately tied to local resources.
