short description
The Akha tribe represents one of many ethnolinguistic communities found in Northeast India; it is settled among the inaccessible, high-peaked mountains-the life-giving liquid resource is one of the necessities, and methods to collect and use it becomes an integral part of existence here. Water made from brass, a highly corrosion-resistant alloy of copper and zinc, not only retains the hygiene properties of the natural antimicrobial [brass] but also conveys the tribal sense that they have understood the nature environment. The narrow mouth reduces contamination risk and employs much precision while pouring water. The cone shape favors stability whether it is on uneven terrain or carried over a long distance.

A classic example of functional works of art and traditional design. It has a flat hollow base and conical upper vessel that gives it stability and also aids in handling, especially with daily activities like fetching and storing water. The long narrow neck also helps prevent spillage and evaporation, a useful quality considering keeping water cool is essential in Akha's hilly habitat. While another necks down balancing act when the vessel is comfortably born on women's heads or shoulders. Brass is strong and has inherent antimicrobial properties. Choosing brass also declares the Akha's ingenuity in making the most of available materials for durable domestic implements. A vessel of this kind can be ceremonially used in purification and offering rites. Among multiple tribes of Northeast India, metal utensils signify wealth and are found in dowries and/ or ritual paraphernalia. In this way, the Akha link engraved or uniquely shaped brass items with their material culture, as well as their everyday life and traditional belief systems.
