description
The Gadabas, who are distributed in parts of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, are known for their traditions, culture, and arts and crafts that are strongly oriented to aesthetics. Among all the utilitarian artifacts the tribe produces, the Churki stands out as both an agricultural instrument used in the field and an aesthetic expression. And the Churki is a round and medium-sized bamboo basket made of very thin splits of bamboo. It differs from common agricultural baskets due to being festively colored with designs in bright contrasting splotches that are typically yellow and pink. This is more than mere decoration; it also exhibits the Gadaba's penchant for marrying utility with artistry in their day-to-day items and clothing. The Churki is well woven, thus stronger and more durable for day-to-day use in agriculture operations like carrying harvested crops, seeds, or anything that farmers need. Its base is constructed of warp strands only, providing strong footing and supporting flexibility. This further enhances easy handling and traveling across rough terrains, which is common in the hilly environment inhabited by the Gadaba people. The Churki also bears testimony to the community's sustainable usage of its natural resources-bamboo and natural dyes. The art of basket weaving, labor-intensive and generationally transmitted, accounts for both Gadaba's identity and economy, especially for its women artisans.
