short description
The wooden mug with an ornamental handle is a ceremonial item of the Angami Naga of Nagaland, India. Angami craftsmanship is about balancing functionality with aesthetic simplicity, signified by the otherwise plain inner and outer surfaces of this mug, which naturally is wide-open. The mug is carved from a single block of hardwood, locally sourced, and was traditionally employed during important rituals, festivals, and community functions. In contrast, the handle is the only ornamented feature of the vessel, which carries symbolic carvings that are probably indicative of motifs for prosperity, fertility, or even some sort of protection from one's ancestors. In the case of the handle, the intricately carved portion stands in stark contrast to the undecorated, smooth-surfaced body that puts emphasis on the area mostly held in contact with the user.

Mugs of this kind would be used to serve zu (rice beer) or water during ceremonial occasions, thus cementing social ties and honoring the guests. The wide opening allows for easy pouring and drinking during festivals when many participants would often share out of one vessel. In Angami culture, wooden products have meanings far beyond functional items-a canvas for artistic expression, a bearer of social value, and regarding spiritual beliefs. This ceremonial mug serves to remind of the tribe's close ties with nature and traditions, and of its woodcraft heritage
