Cane Helmet of Mishmi Tribe
description
This circular-shaped cane helmet it is made from fine, firm, and closely woven cane. It is the pride of the rich craftsmanship of the cane artisans in the region. The very structure of the whole body comprises closely interlaced cane strips, which makes it stronger and lighter at the same time-adapted to daily tribal use or ceremonial wear.
A noticeable projection on the anterior rim adds a design element but also some functional value, perhaps as a shade or deflective guard. The helmet consists of a twisted bark thread affixed to the rim at two points around the head for either tying or securing during ambulation or ritual dances. In former times, helmets like these would have been worn by people of the tribe in such events as rituals and hunting or even for communal festivals. Very often, because of everyday use, a whole lot of cultural identity has been incorporated into these helmets. The tribe has used natural materials such as cane and bark fiber in order to showcase the intimate relationship that they have created with their surroundings.
