The Cane Hat
description
More than functional items, the cane hat could serve as a marker of culture and identity. It is, of course, worn during festivals and congregations among the community, but also during work in the fields. The canes have been sometimes decorated with natural components such as feathers or leaves to signify the tie with nature and tribal identity. The cane hat of the Apatani has increasingly attracted researchers and tourists in recent years, not only for its unique design but also as a symbol of sustainable craftsmanship. The cane hat would continue to be a very visible proud expression of tradition within the Apatani community as they grapple with the modern world while keeping their toes in the heritage stream.
