description
An old cane belt, attached to Khampti tribes, an ethnic group known for their excellent bamboo and cane craftsmanship in Arunachal Pradesh, is made of thin strips of cane-an ideal material for combing out flexibility and durability. The currently existing damaged belt has some broken pieces tied with bark fiber that symbolize the resourcefulness the tribe employs in their repair and reuse.

Such cane belts would usually have been worn around the waist for practical and decorative use. They served to keep traditional dresses intact during strenuous activities and marked personal identity and expression of culture. Bark fiber tie-up of the cane pieces follows the eco-friendliness and forest resource dependency of the Khampti tribe. This belt, despite its worn condition, offers a lot of insight into traditional Khampti material culture. It stands witness to their art in weaving natural material and modifying objects for serving that purpose for a long time. Now housed in the Indian Museum, Kolkata, the artifact represents not only a functional piece of clothing but also an aspect of tribal culture and craftsmanship.
