description
This complete set of bamboo spikes or pore for Pangis comes from the Naga tribe of Nagaland and represents the community's resourceful utilization of natural material for everyday survival and defense. The bundle consists of three single spikes, all made of bamboo, a highly available, strong and flexible material.
Each spike has been made well with one end pointed and the other blunt. The pointed tip would make them effective as traps or defensive tools while the blunt end would make for easy handling or anchoring into the ground. These bamboo spikes were normally used for hunting or in hoaxes for protecting tribal settlements from wild animals and enemies.
It expresses the simplicity of Naga designs and in-depth knowledge of the environment and ability to bring peasant materials to form strategic tools. More than their functional roles, such items would also have been symbolic in tribal warfare and initiation rites.
Now these bamboo spikes have become cultural artifacts, tracing the inventive streaks and survival strategies of the Naga backward into history.
