short description
There exists a flat basket, an ancient craft of the Binjhal tribe, an indigenous tribal community of central and eastern India, chiefly Odisha and Chhattisgarh. The Binjhals are skilled and competent craftsmen, making quality products with bamboo to make them hard-wearing and really useful for everyday use. The most proud of their weaving art would be the flat basket. The flat basket is made out of splits of bamboo, gifted skillfully into bending and weaving into a construction strong yet flexible. The rim of the basket is circular, allowing convenience in accessing into the basket to take out whatever material is put in it. The bottom, however, appears slightly square with four sharp corners: a shape that sets it apart, in a way, from the usual round-bottom discontinued baskets; its sturdiness allows it to rest peacefully on a flat ground, general packing, and holding stuff.

The rim of the basket is double reinforced with flat splits of bamboo for durability and shape retention. Bamboo splits in flat form construction not only give the structure but also add to the beauty of the Flat Basket, which speaks of Binjhal craftsmanship. The basket has different uses in the everyday life of the Binjhal tribe as grain storage, food conveyance, or storage of other household items. Baskets-making is considered a craft and a heritage of extreme value, transmitted from one generation to another, and constitutes a crucial part of that culture.
