description
This Battle axe preserved in Indian Museum, Kolkata signifies the conventional weaponry of Khond tribe of Odisha. This axe is made of iron and wood and was used for purposes such as warfare and in ceremonies as well.
The weapon has an iron blade with a rectangular shape and a sharp, almost straight cutting edge, accompanied by two pointed ends at either side. This design was meant to inflict maximum damage during the battle. Inserting the wooden handle into the socket of the iron blade ensures a good grip and balance. At the top of the handle is an iron point that adds to the pretty look. The handle slightly narrows from the socket in the upper part, giving it a special shape, which makes it easier to use.
Battle axes of the Khond tribe were not just for combat but were also considered symbols of strength and honor in society. These were generally used in tribal fights, for hunting along with performing some rituals. Such craftsmanship reflects their native forging skills as well as their resourceful use of locally available materials.
