The Kate is a traditional bark cot crafted by the Rabha tribe. The furniture is indigenous, designed using natural materials available locally. This cot is simple and small in size. It is made from the bark of the seals creeper, a forest shrub that is strong and flexible: very light and comfortable. In its design, it is a matter of ergonomics and sustainability. It has a simple frame made of wood resting on four cylindrical legs, which give it strength. An interesting feature is that it slopes toward one side: perhaps ergonomically designed-to rest, support on work, or during traditional healing or childcare. The top of the cot is a bark mat, providing a breathable, hard, yet comfortable surface.
The cot in the home is used for both ritual and domestic purposes, the Kates being a reflection of the Rabha's sustainable living and proper utilization of forest resources.
