Population and distribution-wise, the number of Kukis has been recorded as being 10,965 in Tripura as per Census 2011. These people used to live on hills with occupations in jhum cultivation (slash-and-burn) and fruit farming but have now mostly shifted to the plains for agriculture and animal husbandry as their primary economic pursuits.

Culture and Religion- Kuki culture lays a lot of emphasis on traditional dances, music, and festivals in community life. Conversion to Christianity (mainly Protestantism) by missionary activities provided for mass conversion of Kukis into Christianity in the 19th and 20th centuries. Some still keep their indigenous faith and customs. Current Issues- For instance, continued ethnic rivalries and conflicts against these Kuki people in places like Manipur that displace these Kuki people in dire humanitarian conditions only reiterate peace-building and socio-economic developmental endeavors. So an understanding of the historical background, culture and diversity, and contemporary problems to the Kuki would become helpful for much-needed inclusive development and peace in the northeastern states of India.
