The Bamboo Split Basket: A traditional art of the Khasi, one of the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya in the Northeast of India. Well known about pronouncing wonderful skills in weaving, the Khasis work with bamboo splits for making a variety of useful things including this unique square basket. The designs are practically and aesthetically perfect because they practically show deep understanding by the tribe regarding the indigenous materials as well as weaving techniques. Very attractive and useful, this attractive basket has a tiny upper circular opening, which is such that when at rest, items within the basket cannot spill off in any way. Basket square is stable and flat on the base, very much true to the basic character of the square-where it lovingly sits on the ground. The whole basket is fashioned from tightly woven bamboo splits that have been placed in a manner that ensures strength of the basket but unmatched internal beauty with bamboo remaining unrefined so as allow it to remain airtight and yet lightweight enough for comfortable everyday use.

In many ways, the Khasi tribe uses this basket-to gather foodstuffs, store grains, or carry goods about. The things that these daily performances may carry in the bamboo basket are usually regarded as bulky but mostly they are very fragile. For this reason, bamboo is the right material for these-duty baskets: heavy yet light enough to take anywhere. The small circular opening is designed very well to securely hold small items so they won't fall out. The Bamboo Split Basket is a product of the practical prowess of the Khasi as well as a lot to tell in the culture of the Khasi in the sustainable use of natural resources.
