The Bamboo Haversack is not really a mere utility item made by the Naga tribe of Nagaland but a vibrant tribal identity and artistry per se. Primarily carried by the people of Nagaland for daily essentials, this is conical-shaped basket with great skill woven by hand from split bamboo and cane strips, showcasing indigenous techniques of craftsmanship passed down through generations. There are two cotton straps attached to this bag making it easier for carrying along the back quite reflecting the functionality demanded of this hilly region of Nagaland.

A flat bamboo spathe is stitched at the back side for additional support and structure. What really makes this haversack memorable is its ornamental detailing: multicoloured bead strings, animal skin, and even a boar’s canine are used to ornament the front, embodying thus the tribe's reverence for hunting and nature. For conveying a symbolic dimension to the bright haversack, a wooden effigy of a human head is appended onto the bead string, while a bigger wooden head is connected onto one corner. Through these, one can see the ancestral heritage of the Nagas, their warrior traditions, and also a lot of their spiritual beliefs. These adornments often give away the social status of the wearer, clan identity, or even achievements on the battleground or hunting. The bamboo haversack is a perfect example to demonstrate how art and utility in tribe material culture come together and narrate the story of a people quite interlaced with their land, legacy, and community values.
