description
This yampak is a typical bamboo hat of Manipur and boasts both the heritage and the traditions associated with bamboo craftsmanship. This is used primarily by the working class, farmers mostly, who do ditch labor or field work. It provides not only protection but also culture representation.
Structurally, The Yampak is dome shaped with a circular base from very finely split bamboo and dried leaves. The external and internal surfaces of this hat are woven and then reconstructed with bamboo strips bundled very closely to give a strong and beautiful finish. The brim is very well woven at the rim and strengthens the structure of the cap and gives intricate beauty. Given the varied topography and climate of Manipur, these hats are necessarily worn as protection against the sun and rain. This is more than just a utilitarian item of clothing; it gives the ideals of rural living and a people's connection with their immediate natural materials. The Yampak symbolizes the eco-friendly and sustainable practice of indigenous artisans as they eco-friendly employ local materials such as bamboo and leaves
