short description
The Mizo tribes of Mizoram are well-known for making bamboo baskets and these people are ever resourceful in using bamboo in baskets. An egg basket is cylindrical in shape and has a square base. Split bamboo being strong and flexible, and in plenty, is collected from hill areas of Northeast India. This very construction is to keep the eggs secure and organized. The square base has ensured that the basket will not tip over, while the cylindrical shape allows it to fit into just about any nook. The size and shape of the basket attest to it being one that was for common household use; this implicates itself in the self-sustaining subsistence-agricultural lifestyle of the Mizo, where poultry keeping is a tiny but yet significant factor of sustenance economy.

The making of bamboo items is a cultural and economical activity for the Mizo. Bamboo is a lifeline in every aspect of their culture, from pots to musical instruments to housing structures. From generation to generation, skills of basketry have included splitting bamboo, weaving, and making thin strips of bamboo into durable objects of utility. This small egg basket, used as it is, speaks first and foremost of utility, but just as clearly it denotes a plane of indigenous knowledge, eco-friendly lifestyles, and age-old craftsmanship rich in present-day manifestations within the Mizo community.
