short description
This ethereal ornament is an ear ornament fashioned in the age-old tradition by members of the Rongmei Naga tribe, predominantly found in some parts of Manipur and Nagaland in India. It includes finely-split bamboo and exemplifies the high craftsmanship of these tribes towards ornamentation of ear with fine split bamboo- the hallmark of all Nagami material culture. The shape remains simple but highly artistic. A meticulous split at one end allows several narrow bamboo strips to dangle as delicate fringes, giving movement to the ornament with an aesthetic touch. The opposite end of the bamboo remains closed, forming the sturdy section to push through or attach to the ear.

Bamboo is plenty around the area; within it is also the type of material that is mainly utilized by the Rongmei tribe, which is more than daily utility items: ornaments, ceremonial objects, and symbolic accessories. This type of ear ornament smelt of being used by the community in that certain period under the banner of festival, ritual, or any such major occasion.Such ornaments signified age, marriage status, or even social standing within the Rongmei society. The minute work of split bamboo would also represent family pride and artistic ability of the individual. Bamboo ear ornaments were lightweight and comfortable to wear, easily constructed yet carried high cultural identity. This culture has engaged modern materials to replace most of the older bamboo jewelry; however, artisans and preservationists survive by celebrating and recreating their heritage through those designs as an art form among the Rongmei.
